Niles, OH (Aug. 2, 2024) United Church Homes’ The Niles Community is pleased to announce the successful installation of two new curb cuts, significantly improving outdoor accessibility for its residents. This enhancement was made possible through a generous $4,500 grant from The Youngstown Foundation, awarded in September of last year. The installation of the curb cuts was completed in early July, providing much-needed accessibility improvements behind the apartment building at The Niles Community.
The curb cuts are ADA-compliant and have been specifically designed to facilitate easier access for residents using assistive devices such as wheelchairs, rollators, and crutches. With these new curb cuts, residents can now safely and confidently move throughout the property, especially when accessing the parking area behind the building. The curb cuts also benefit residents and visitors who push strollers or bring in luggage or grocery carts.
The full $4,500 grant from The Youngstown Foundation was utilized for the construction and installation of these curb cuts, eliminating the need for additional fundraising efforts. “This project demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that all residents, regardless of mobility challenges, have equal access to our facilities and can fully enjoy their living environment,” said Jordan Volkov, Regional Property Manager.
Two residents shared their positive experiences following the completion of the curb cuts. One resident remarked, “When my daughter came to visit, that was the first thing I showed her. I’m so excited to be confident enough to walk with just my cane from my patio to the ramps.” Another resident added, “I see more of my peers being more comfortable to do more on their own from bringing in their groceries or getting to be more social by attending our food truck events. They are getting a lot of use.”
