Charitable Giving Strategies

We have seen some major changes to our tax law this year. As a result, many individuals are finding new ways to make their charitable giving even more tax advantaged! Linda is a great example, as she has always been a faithful donor to her church and other organizations, but will no longer be able to give enough to exceed the new standard deduction ($12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples filing jointly). She has been a meticulous saver and worked hard to build up her IRA. When she reached the age of 70 ½, she was required to start taking distributions from her IRA. However, instead of taking the full distribution for herself, she now directs a portion of it to charities she supports.

UCH changing of the board

After 11 years on the United Church Homes Board of Directors, Sue Ellis attended her final Board meetings in May, leaving a legacy that extends three generations.

Cathy Green, Chairman, United Church Homes Board of Directors

Last year was one full of opportunities and challenges for United Church Homes. In 2017, we expanded our capacity to serve older adults in 14 states and two Native American nations, extending our mission to new territory. We also are committed to seeking out and creating ways to enrich the lives of people living in our communities. We continue to expand memory care life enrichment programs like Comfort Matters, Opening Minds through Art and Music & Memory while identifying new ways to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

United Church Homes is Making an Impact

As part of its core value of transparency, UCH has begun documenting community benefits in three areas:

In 2017, United Church Homes communities donated over $20,000 to local, national and international charities through worship service collections

For residents of United Church Homes communities, giving is a way of life and a ritual to which they are deeply committed.

The celebration included a ritual of blessing with wooden hearts hand-painted by Fairhaven residents. Each heart represented the vision of abundant life at United Church Homes.

Residents of Muir Manor, a United Church Homes managed affordable housing community in New Albany, Indiana, were thrilled when Housing Manager Faye Banet announced the replacement of flooring in their apartments.
