UCH employee completes Leadership Marion! course

United Church Homes would like to congratulate Nikki Cox, information technologies/help desk technician, for completing the 2013-2014 Leadership Marion! course. The nine-month class focused on aspects vital to any healthy, vibrant community including topics that explored educational issues, governmental structures, social service needs, economic development, arts and culture, recreation, exploring the future of the community and healthcare.

Leadership Marion! moves outside of a traditional classroom setting and into the field, with extensive appearances by guest lecturers as well as local tours and site visits. Beyond gaining valuable leadership skills, participants learn about Marion’s rich history as they are asked to collaborate on a class project to enhance its future.

“This opened me up to more positive experiences in Marion. It was an excellent opportunity, with the main goal being to give Marion’s public a glimpse of what we experienced,” Nikki said.

The group also toured businesses such as Whirlpool Corporation, Wyandot Popcorn and the Marion Palace Theater. Cox said meeting the “guardsmen” from the Palace was an extremely inspiring moment.

“It was their desire to give culture back to the community, their determination to keep the Palace open that made it inspiring,” she said.

The group completes one group project to support the growth and continuation of the program. They created a video promoting the building of a foundation to change the way Marion is perceived, to encourage our neighbors to believe in a positive outcome for the future of our town.
