Eighth Annual Abundant Aging Symposium

Dismantling Ageism: How Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination Based on Age Affect Us All

Ageism–how we think, feel and act toward others based on how old we think they are. Anyone can experience ageism at any point in their life span. Our focus will be looking at ageism experienced by people later in life.
Both research and experience demonstrate that people experience ageism in the workplace (or in trying to find a job), in healthcare, in the media, in faith community settings, or when trying to find information from a sales associate in a store. Ageism is one of the last socially acceptable forms of prejudice and one of the only ones which everyone has to opportunity to experience.
During the Symposium, we will:
• Define Ageism in order to understand the scope and impact this has for our personal happiness and security as well as our society’s greater well-being.
• Demonstrate both the personal and systemic challenges ageism presents.
• Share tools and best practices to overcome ageism.
• Introduce resources for Ageism Awareness Day (Saturday, October 7, 2023 (the day following the conference).
