Founded in 1820, Marion was named after the Revolutionary War General Francis Marion. In 1874, the first steam shovel was manufactured in Marion, marking the beginning of industry. Now the city is home to many varied industries and a large farming community. Brownstone Terrace is named in honor of Dr. Robert S. Brown, Mayor of Marion from January 1988 to December 1991.
