UCC Open and Affirming Statement

UCH's deep commitment to LGBT older adultsThe United Church of Christ (UCC) has been welcoming persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions to fully participate in the service of our congregations for over 30 years. Those who have made an Open and Affirming statement have been through a process to welcome LGBTQ congregants into their congregation. In 2012, the United Church Homes Board of Directors voted to make all of our senior care communities Open and Affirming too. We were among the first within UCC-affiliated organizations to make this Open and Affirming statement.

Cultural Competency for LGBT Older Adults

Sage Platinum 2018

In 2017, United Church Homes partnered with SAGECare to provide LGBT cultural competency training for employees in nine of our senior living communities to help staff understand the LGBT community and convey a welcoming and inclusive environment in their work places. SAGECare, a division of SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is the nation’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults.

Through extensive training across multiple channels, front-line staff and executive leadership at UCH achieved the platinum level. Today, across nine locations and our central office, 80 percent of our employees received one hour of training and 80 percent of our executive leadership and administrators completed four hours of training, exceeding our initial expectations.
