United Church Homes Receives Grant to Enhance Safety for Older Adults at The Parkvue Community on Catawba Island
PORT CLINTON, OH (Jul. 31, 2025) United Church Homes is pleased to announce that The Parkvue Community on Catawba Island has been awarded a $3,500 grant from the Ottawa County Community Foundation to support the installation of a new exterior security camera system for its affordable housing building serving older adults.
The funding, awarded through the Foundation’s unrestricted funds program, will help improve safety and security for approximately 125 residents and their guests. The project aims to deter unauthorized access, reduce vulnerability to crime and scams and provide greater peace of mind for the residents who call the community home.
“With this grant, we are taking a vital step toward protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Gloria Hurwitz, Vice President of Advancement. “We are deeply grateful to the Ottawa County Community Foundation for recognizing the importance of this effort and supporting our mission to help older adults live safely and independently.”
The total project cost is $4,700 and includes the purchase and installation of a network video recorder, hard drive, and five exterior network cameras. Once installed, the system will provide real-time monitoring, help prevent security threats and support faster emergency response times.
This initiative responds to a growing need in the region. Port Clinton, located nearby, reported 990.4 property crimes and 194.8 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2020. As aging adults face increasing risks from solicitors and fraud, security upgrades like these are essential for protecting their safety and well-being.
The Ottawa County Community Foundation supports projects that demonstrate innovation, meet significant community needs and contribute to the long-term quality of life in Ottawa County. This grant reflects the Foundation’s continued commitment to “Doing Good. Forever.”
United Church Homes remains committed to providing person-centered care and services that empower older adults to age in place with dignity, safety and peace of mind.
