More than 30 veterans who are current residents of Chapel Hill were honored during the recognition ceremony. This innovative program was organized by Jerry Martin, admissions coordinator at Chapel Hill, and Sue Simmons of Blue Star Mothers of Ohio, an organization dedicated to ensuring that veterans receive recognition and respect for serving our country.
The hour-long program began with a rousing kick-off with the arrival and delivery of American flags by members of the Patriot Guard Riders, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts with a personal connection to veterans. Officers from the Summit County Sheriff’s Department presented the colors.
Given that 80 percent of the honorees served in either World War II or the Korean War and are now in their 80’s and 90’s, it was inspiring to watch them stand, salute and sing when the theme songs of their respective branches were played. Some were overcome by emotion. These colors truly do run deep. Also among the 150 attendees were veterans of Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Gulf War, Cold War and the War on Terror.
Several distinguished guests were on hand to present proclamations and certificates, headlined by Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor, and David Dobo, the military representative for U.S. Congressman Jim Renacci. Both spoke of the valor and selflessness of these men and women who, as they said, went away to do a job, and then came home to resume their lives.
