United Church Homes (UCH) is excited to announce a new initiative in our mission to promote the riches of abundant aging—our Abundant Aging podcast!
As an Abundant Aging blog subscriber, you are already familiar with our commitment to abundant aging. As UCH President & CEO Rev. Kenneth Daniel says, abundant aging is “the experience of deep satisfaction, wholeness, and connection to the world; an experience of dignity, respect, and compassion that is engaging with others to better the world for generations to follow. It is being a part of a community that embraces the gifts that older adults bring.”
Aging is a natural process that everyone experiences, but it can be challenging to navigate. While there are plenty of stereotypes associated with growing older, everyone’s aging process is different. The podcast will provide helpful examples to enhance the aging experience. The new Abundant Aging podcasts offer listeners ideas, information, and inspiration on how to improve our lives as we age.
No one has a crystal ball that shows what our future selves will be, so we will lean in on personal experiences. The podcast offers insight from those who are aging ahead of us as well as the observations and conclusions from those who work with, study and research the various dimensions that affect the aging process.
The podcast has two areas of content: The Art of Aging and Ask A NaviGuide.
The Art of Aging podcasts explore what it means to age abundantly. Co-hosted by thought-leader Rev. Beth Long-Higgins, UCH VP of Engagement and the Director of The Ruth Frost Parker Center for Abundant Aging, the podcast explores aging, ageism and how older adults can live their best lives contrary to what society is telling us.
A key theme is the importance of connections, community, and purpose as we age. We have all internalized the ageist views from the culture around us which can affect the aging processes. Social norms and systems, and our interpersonal relationships are full of messages and assumptions of the worth and dignity of older adults. This podcast explores the debilitating effects of loneliness and isolation; how we can find joy, meaning and purpose; and how we can continue to contribute to the community around us at each stage of our later years.
The Ask A NaviGuide podcasts feature UCH caregiving experts, called NaviGuides, from UCH’s service coordination program, sharing their experience and knowledge to listeners who may be facing illness, hospitalization or in need of help navigating stressful situations. It also features experts in the fields of health, wellness, and caregiving. This podcast explores topics such as struggles with Medicare, Medicare Advantage, mental and physical health, managing chronic conditions and caregiving.
A key focus is on evidence-based advice and strategies. The podcast draws on the latest research in aging and health, giving listeners actionable information. Whether you’re looking to understand hospitalizations or caregiving, this podcast offers tips and tools that are grounded in experience and tailored to the needs of older adults.
Ideas, Information, and Inspiration
In addition to practical information, the Abundant Aging podcast offers inspiration and motivation. The podcast features interviews with experts in the aging space who have tips on living life to the fullest, whether it be through travel, creative pursuits, or simply enjoying time with loved ones.
